CLEARWATER, FL (WFLA) – Tammie Whiting, 53, of Largo was doing all of the right things, according to police.
She was crossing with the light, she was in the crosswalk, but a car ran a red light, hitting Whiting and leaving her in the middle of the road in critical condition. The accident happened at 6:15 p.m. Thursday night at the intersection of Myrtle Avenue and Turner Street in Clearwater.
Kristina Graham owns a business on the corner and ran outside after hearing the noise.
“I looked out the window and ended the appointment because I could see there was someone laying in the road. There were a lot of cars stopped and it was pretty terrible,” said Graham.
Police believe the car that hit Whiting was a Ford Taurus-type vehicle, the car may have been silver of gray.
Maria Brown works in a hair salon near the intersection where the accident happened and can’t believe the driver left the scene.
“We’re responsible for each other. He should have stopped, or she should have stopped, I hope they can live with their conscious,” said Brown.
