Actors strive to portray real cops on NBC drama ‘Chicago PD’

News Channel 8 anchor/reporter Candace McCowan went behind the scenes at NBC's Chicago PD.

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — For the cast of Chicago PD, they work to give you a glimpse of not the good cops or the bad cops, but of real Chicago cops.

“When you watch the show it’s not like they can say ‘Hey that’s farfetched. That stuff isn’t happening in real life.’ This stuff is happening,” said Jon Seda, who plays detective Antonio Dawson on the show.

“It’s another thing to get in the mindset and portray these guys. There’s some terrible stories out there that society for the most part never knows about and never sees and many don’t want to know about. I think Chicago PD tackles other cases that you wouldn’t normally see on other shows and dig deep,” added Seda.

News Channel 8 went behind the scenes with the cast to get the scoop on how they make the magic work on television. The show’s sweetheart, Sophia Bush, is often hard to catch up with. But, she did make some time to talk about her on-screen romance.

“Because Lindsey and Halstead are in the same unit, they have to separate the personal and the professional,” said Bush about the romance that has been brewing for a while, and is now public on the show.

“At the end of the day, if you find happiness, if you find a person who loves you, go toward that. Enjoy it , take it, because you never know when it could change,” added Bush.

Bush did not talk about her off-screen romance with Jesse Lee Soffer, although life often imitates art.

As for what happens next with Bush’s character, she said she doesn’t know, because the writers often change the scripts.

In the meantime, the cast is working on showing the real struggles of cops; from being the targets of violence, to police brutality.

“Every script that I read for every episode, there is something happening where we are doing our best to fight the evil that be, but we always come out on top usually.  There have been times unfortunately where they have hit not just close to home, but right at home for me,” said LaRoyce Hawkins who plays Officer Kevin Atwater on the show. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
