BRANDON, Fla. (WFLA) — Students at Brandon High School arrived to school on Monday morning to find a disturbing sight on campus, a dead deer hanging from the school’s flagpole.
Brandon High School administrators have asked the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office to investigate.
Hillsborough County Schools spokesperson Tanya Arja said that when employees arrived at Brandon High School on Monday morning, it was dark and they didn’t notice the deer. Then, when the sun came up, students and employees noticed the dead deer hanging from flagpole.
School staff took the deer down immediately and called the HCSO to investigate.
Late Monday morning, a HCSO spokesperson said that the deer was a full grown buck, that was found hanging halfway up the school’s flagpole. The deer had been dead for about six hours and had probably been shot, said the sheriff’s office.
Investigators do not think it’s anything more than a school prank, however they are taking it seriously. Detectives will be looking at surveillance video. An alarm did go off at the school around 3 a.m.
The sheriff’s office said that if any arrests are made in connection with the incident, possible charges could include trespassing and improper disposal of a deceased animal.
The incident attracted a crowd of students near the flagpole. Some students took photos of the dead deer and shared them on social media.
