CLEARWATER, FL (WFLA) – It was a horrible crash scene. Two cars smashed up following a traffic accident.
But what made it even worse, a mother and her infant daughter in a stroller were hit by one of the cars while walking on the sidewalk.
Amy Bennett was a witness to the accident, “I don’t think I will ever forget what that baby looked like, I have
never seen an infant breathing like that.”
A still distraught Bennett said she rushed to help the mother and baby girl who were thrown into nearby bushes from the impact of one of the cars.
Bennett said of the mother, “she was just cradling the baby and the baby was gasping for air and bleeding from nose and chest area.”
The mother and two drivers were also hurt, but the baby girl suffered the most serious injuries.
Rob Shaw with Clearwater Police said, “our medics were able to stabilize and treat the baby while we waited on “Bayflight” and then the child who is less than two months old was taken to Bayfront in St. Pete.”
Michael Reichert is a student at nearby St. Petersburg College.
He said the intersection of Drew street and Old Coachman road is a problem spot.
Reichert went on to say, “this intersection is just as bad as Gulf-to-Bay and Belcher, it needs the same cameras as they have up there,e this is not the first accident that has happened here that has been bad.”
The injured child was transferred to All Children’s Hospital where she is stable and no longer has life-threatening injuries.
The accident is still under investigation.
