Are you tired of waiting for a special occasion to bust out the bubbly? Well, according to a study, drinking one to two glasses of champagne a week can help strengthen your memory and prevent the onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s.
In 2013, researchers at the University of Reading in Great Britain found that phenolic compounds in champagne improve spatial memory, which is important in navigating and performing complex tasks and calculations.
In their study, scientists gave rats a moderate dose of champagne each day for six weeks, equivalent to a 1.5 glasses per week for humans. “Daily supplementation with low to moderate dose of Champagne for six weeks led to an improvement in memory,” study author Dr. Giulia Corona wrote.
Dr. Corona went on to explain that phenolic compounds in champagne “improve the communication between cells and encourage nerves that carry electrical signals in the brain to regenerate.” These researchers hope to translate their findings into concrete recommendations for people.
However, health organization NHS Choices is questioning the study. In a statement released Monday, the group reiterated that this study was performed on rats. “A slightly improved maze performance in a small number of rats does not necessarily translate into humans having a reduced risk of dementia from drinking champagne. The health risks of consuming large amounts of alcohol are well-known,” NHS Choices says on its website.
