Elderly man killed in early morning crash involving Pasco deputy

HOLIDAY, Fla. (WFLA)—An elderly man was killed in an early morning crash involving a Pasco County Sheriff’s deputy on Sunday.

According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, preliminary information suggests 98-year-old William Vatalaro of Holiday ran a red light at U.S. 19 and Darlington in Holiday early Sunday morning. That’s when he collided with the Sheriff’s Office vehicle.

Deputy Hans Bollenbacher, 30, had one passenger in his car Tyler Hammelman, 19, a Sheriff’s Explorer, which is a volunteer who job-shadows deputies to learn about law enforcement.

Vatalaro along with Bollenbacher and Hammelman were transported to the Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point, where Vatalaro later died.

Both the Sheriff’s Deputy and the Sheriff’s Explorer were treated and released.
