WFLA Friday Blitz heads to Clearwater High

CLEARWATER, FL (WFLA) — The Clearwater High School Tornadoes are taking on the East Lake Eagles Friday night at 7:30 pm. The non-conference game is the last of the regular season. Clearwater is the District Champion this year, and will head to the playoffs for the first time in years.

Students woke up early for a pep rally hosted by WFLA News Channel 8 and 933FLZ. The Marine Corps JROTC, marching band, cheerleaders, and football team crowded into the gym to cheer on their team.

Head coach Don Mesick attributes the team’s winning streak to off-season training. The team is currently 8-1 overall (5-0 District).

“We ended long losing streaks to Countryside and Largo, but more importantly ended a long playoff drought,” he wrote.

Friday is also Senior Night, and parents will walk on the field with students from the football team, marching band, and cheerleading squad during a pre-game ceremony. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
