Witness: Woman possibly chugging beer when she struck girl in Auburndale

AUBURNDALE, FL (WFLA) — A little girl is fighting for her life after getting hit by a car while riding a bike in Auburndale on Wednesday. The crash happened near Caldwell Elementary School, in the 100 block of Adams Streer south of Gandy Road in Auburndale.

According to police, 35-year-old Regina Shelton hit 5-year-old Jasira Santos, who was riding her bike with her mom at the time. Witnesses report seeing Shelton driving erratically in a green 1995 Jeep Cherokee SUV and even trying to chug a beer while driving.

After hitting the little girl, Shelton hit an above-ground service line. Someone allegedly saw the woman trying to drive away and was able to grab the keys out of the ignition, police said.

Jasira underwent emergency surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital. At last check she was in critical condition. Shelton is in Winter Haven Hospital.

Officers took a blood sample and sent it to FDLE. Charges are pending. Officers believe she was under the influence during the crash.

Shelton has an extensive arrest record including drug charges, burglary, grand theft, aggravated assault, and several prostitution charges.
