POLK COUNTY, FL. (WFLA) – Scammers are playing a cruel trick on Polk County elderly residents and it cost one woman her entire checking account. The people pose as bank employees and act like they’re going to provide a more secure debit card.
Polk sheriff’s officials tell News Channel 8 these scammers talk a good talk. They’ve convinced at least two trusting Polk County residents to practically hand over their bank card.
“I don’t know- I just fell for it hook, line, and sinker,” a Winter Haven victim told News Channel 8.
The victim doesn’t her name out there– but she does want to share her story in hopes others won’t end up in the mess she is.
“It was $4,100 when I went to the credit union, I almost fainted,” she said of the money she lost.
She wound up victim to a scam circulating Polk County that sounded so real she didn’t even think twice at what the woman on the other end of the phone suggested.
“The tone of her voice, she sounded really business-like and that she was from Mid-Florida and had to get all the debit cards, they’d be out late that night,” the victim said of the call.
She’d need a new, secure card with a chip in it, the woman told the victim .and in order to get it, she’d need to put her old one in a stamped envelope and leave it under her doormat.
“They’re getting it- the people who called. They’re obviously watching the house, they’re taking that card and they’re using it,” Scott Wilder with Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.
There’s surveillance of one of the victim’s cards being used in Davenport. Detectives are trying to figure out who the man is.
They know there are at least two people behind the scam, but there could be more. Detectives hope someone will recognize the man in the surveillance video and help track them down.
