Pinellas detectives hunt for “predator” of elderly

Angelo Mitchell

PINELLAS COUNTY, FL (WFLA) – Angelo Mitchell, detectives say, is a pro at swindling people like Bob and Carolyn Marek out of money.

“I’d define him as a true predator in our community,” Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. John Spoor said.

A predator who is now the hunted. 8 On Your Side has confirmed prosecutors issued 16 warrants for Mitchell’s arrest, including three charges of grand theft from persons over 65.

The warrants also charge Mitchell, 31, with three counts of failure to secure workers compensation coverage, two counts of unlicensed roofing contracting, two counts of unlicensed specialty contracting (paving), two counts of home solicitation sale without a permit, two counts of failure to give a 3-day right to cancel sales contract.

“We have a very strong case against him and we have cooperation from our victims, hopefully this time we can get some substantial time and get him off the streets and protect our community,” Sgt. Spoor added. The Mareks are among those victims.

“Initially it was like $750.00 dollars,” Carolyn Marek said.

In September, 8 On Your Side exposed how Mitchell’s Roofing, an unlicensed company, ended up taking the Marek’s for $9,000 dollars. According to detectives Mitchell’s M.O. is he approached senior citizens and told them he was working on a neighbor’s roof and noticed that their needed work as well.

“That’s exactly what happened to us, yes,” Carolyn Marek said.

Detectives found Mitchell targeted senior citizens. He uses silver paint, not enough to stop a leak, but more than enough to void any warranty a homeowner might have on their roof and shingles.  He left the Mareks with a ruined roof, more leaks than before he started and a big bill he demanded be paid in full.

“They had parked in our driveway, would not let us out and they were going to get their money,” Carolyn said,.

“They use intimidation, hard sell tactics, they keep coming after you harder and harder and harder until they get what they want,” Sgt. Spoor added.

Blue tarps now sit on the Mareks’ roof, a harsh reminder they were cleaned out by Angelo Mitchell. According to detectives, Mitchell also approaches folks, promising them that he will seal their pavers or re-pave their driveways.

If Angelo Mitchell approaches you or you know where he is, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office detectives ask that you contact them at 727 582-6200, or call Crime Stoppers 1 800 873-TIPS (8477).
