October is National Disabilities Awareness Month. Mouth Painter Mariam Paré is an ambassador of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists, an organization representing the unique talents of its 800 working artists with disabilities. As a 20-year-old aspiring artist, she was the victim of cross-fire gang violence and a gun shot in the back left her a quadriplegic. During rehabilitation, a therapist taught Mariam to hold a pencil in her mouth to write her name. This single lesson exposed Mariam to a new possible way of painting.
