RIVERVIEW, FL (WFLA) – The family of a Tampa man is trying to figure out what is next after the father of five daughters was hit and killed.
Maurice Harris was walking near St. Joseph’s hospital Saturday morning when a truck came right toward him. Harris was with two of his five daughters at the time.
“They have eye witness reports that shows that he actually got children from harm’s way before he got that full impact that killed him,” said Maurice’s sister Lashune Harris.
“It’s hard to believe, this is a person that literately is here today, gone tomorrow. Their dad was under the vehicle and it actually took a little while for anyone to know that he was there. The children, they were trying to notify people that the dad was under the vehicle,” Harris added.
The two girls were not injured but Lashune tells News Channel 8 that they are still struggling, trying to cope with what they saw. Lashune says her brother lived for his daughters and died for them.
“If he wouldn’t have done that we would probably be talking about three deaths right now. He loved his children he was always with them he made sure that they were provided for, he did activities with him all the time,” added Lashune.
Family has now set up a GoFundMe page as they raise money for a funeral: https://www.gofundme.com/tj73ut7g
The driver of the truck has not been charged. He told police he was suffering a medical episode at the time of the crash. Police did get a warrant to test the blood of 18-year-old Bryce O’Neil. They’re waiting on results.
“I don’t know if there is impairment but I kind of feel for him because he’s a young person and he’s got to live his life knowing that he killed a human being,” Harris said.
The Harris family is now trying to determine who will take the five girls in.
