CLEARWATER, FL (WFLA) – Clearwater police officers and crime scene technicians can still be seen in the area where the double fatal hit and run happened last Sunday night.
Two tourists, John Berg and Viola Flores were struck as they tried to cross Memorial Causeway.
A search warrant shows how police were able to track down the Mercedes-Benz that’s suspected of hitting the couple. A witness reported seeing a silver S-U-V cut in front of her, and then strike the vacationers. As it sped off, she told investigators it had an orange and yellow specialty “Endless Summer” Florida license plate.
Detectives were able to figure only one “G” class Mercedes S-U-V in the Bay area was issued that plate. They went to Chaz Winzenread’s Hillsborough County home, found it in the garage and seized it. They tell us it had front end damage and a missing headlight, similar to one found at the crash scene.
They also questioned two employees at the Island Way Grill near the intersection of the fatal incident..
One waiter said he was 90 percent sure Winzenread had been in the restaurant and a valet remembered seeing a patron driving a Mercedes S-U-V with specialty plates.
Winzenread has not been charged, but he did tell investigators his lawyer told him not to talk to police.
