PASCO COUNTY, FL (WFLA) — The Mitchell High School Mustangs takes on Sunlake Seahawks Friday night at 7:30. Both teams are undefeated in the district, and the conference game will help determine the district winner.
The Mustangs consider this to be one of the biggest games in its history. And if they win next Friday, they would go to the state playoffs for the second year in a row, says Jessica Schultz, from Mitchell High School.
Despite being rivals, the Mustangs are reaching out to help one of Sunlake’s students. Schultz says they’ll raise money to help pay medical expenses for Xavier Johnson, who received a serious head injury in a tubing accident in May.
Students will pass around “X-Boxes” – donation boxes loving named so because Johnson’s first name starts with an “X.” So far, the family received more than $23,000 from their Go Fund Me page
During the morning pep rally, held by WFLA News Channel 8 and 933FLZ, students got up early to cheer on their football team. The pep rally began at 5:30 am, which is extra early for these students because the school practices a late-start day. Classes don’t even begin until 8:40 am.
The drum line, members of the band, cheerleaders, the ‘Stang Gang, and many other students gather to show their support.
