CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) – As the search goes on for a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed two people, News Channel 8 has learned more about the victims. Viola Flores and John Berg were from Illinois. The couple was vacationing in Clearwater.

On her Facebook page, Flores even mentioned going on a “rendezvous with her honey.” Once here in Florida, the couple frequented many spots on Clearwater Beach, including the Surf Side Tap House.

“They looked like they were in heaven,” bartender Michelle Cline said about the couple.

Cline remembers serving the couple. “They sat down. He was like, ‘Whatever you want honey.’ She wanted some Corona. They ordered calamari, although he wanted something totally different. They were in love. They were happy. They were laughing, joking, clearly meant for each other,” she said.

But that vacation, their romance and their lives were cut short. On Sunday night, the driver of a silver Mercedes Benz SUV hit the couple, leaving them dying int he road.  It happened shortly after 8 p.m. on Memorial Causeway at the intersection of Island Way.

Residents living on Island Estates near the crash site have their eyes out for the vehicle.

“How would you feel if it was your family that was it by this car and didn’t care enough to stop? So I am hoping anybody who sees the car would think enough to call,” Clearwater resident Jacquelyn Farmer said.

Carol Lewis and her husband live on Island Estates. “Whoever has it knows that it has been shown on TV, so I don’t think it is going to be in a parking spot, and I hope the police find it and bring the people to justice,” Lewis said about the Mercedes.

Police have received several tips since the video of the vehicle was released Monday. They have followed up on each tip, but thus far they have not found the vehicle or the driver.
