Police arrest man suspected of shooting, killing teen at Tampa party

Richard Newton, 14, was shot and killed at an outdoor birthday party.

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Authorities have arrested a man accused of shooting and killing a 14-year-old boy who was attending an outdoor birthday party in Tampa last March.

The Tampa Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force announced on Monday that they have arrested Joseph Huggins, 22, for the murder of 14-yr-old Richard Newton. Huggins was found hiding in the attic of a home at 3307 77th St. N.

Detectives say on March 21, Newton was at an outdoor birthday party at 8105 9th Ave. when a fight broke out around 11:30 a.m. The fight escalated to gunfire and Newton was shot and killed. Three children were also injured by the gunfire.

CrimeStoppers had offered a $3,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the gunman.
