CLEARWATER, FL (WFLA) – Clearwater police are investigating a hit-and-run traffic crash that left two pedestrians dead Sunday night. It happened shortly after 8 p.m. on Memorial Causeway at the intersection of Island Way. The search continues Monday for the driver, who continued westbound on Memorial Causeway without stopping after the accident, police say.

Clearwater Police Spokesman Rob Shaw says a man and a woman in their 50’s, who were in town from Illinois on vacation, were crossing Memorial from south to north when the driver of a silver Mercedes hit the two and kept going. Paramedics rushed the victims to a local hospital where doctors pronounced both dead. Police have not released their names pending notification of next of kin.

Traffic homicide investigators spent hours on the scene gathering evidence and trying to piece together the sequence of events. A woman driving an SUV behind the Mercedes witnessed the crash and remained on scene to tell investigators when she saw. Officers on Clearwater Beach were also scouring the area looking for that silver Mercedes, that likely has front end damage.

Anyone with information on the accident should call 727-562-4242.
