2 pedestrians died in hit and run accident in Clearwater

The driver of the vehicle, which was described possibly as a silver Mercedes, fled the scene after the accident Sunday night, officials say.


UPDATE: The pedestrians struck in the hit and run accident have died, Clearwater police spokesman Rob Shaw said.

CLEARWATER, FL (WFLA) – Two pedestrians were rushed to an area hospital with serious injuries after a hit-and-run accident on Memorial Causeway Sunday night, officials said.

The accident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, on Memorial Causeway near Island Way, a Clearwater police news release states. Clearwater police officers are on the scene of the accident.

According to Clearwater police spokesman Rob Shaw, preliminary information from the scene indicates a westbound vehicle struck the two pedestrians on the causeway then fled the scene. The vehicle may have been a silver Mercedes with front-end damage.

Both victims were taken to Morton Plant Hospital with life-threatening injuries, a Clearwater police news release states. Their names have not been released.

The causeway’s westbound lanes are closed at this time. Motorists should avoid the area. Those attempting to reach the beach should take the Belleair Causeway instead.
