ORANGE CITY, Fla. — A bear attacked a man and killed a dog in Orange City on Monday night.
Alan Bryant said that he was walking his dog, a 2-year-old Yorkie, on Hollowridge Drive, when a bear attacked and killed the dog, and then bit his pant leg. Bryant was not seriously injured and the bear ran away.
“He knocked me down with one swipe and ripped my jeans. I’ve got bruises,” Bryant said. “My wife is thankful that he didn’t get me. It’s just a terrible thing.”
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers have set up traps in hopes of capturing the bear.
“I lived in upstate New York, near the Adirondack (Mountains), and you saw bears in the garbage bins and that, not in your backyard regularly,” Bryant said.
“This is the first time there’s really been an incident. I think one time one got run over, but other than that I think this is the first time I’ve seen one go after and attack somebody,” said neighbor Nick Berra.
FWC officials said bear attacks are rare even though sightings are common. Residents in the area are urged to keep their garbage bins secured and to not let the incident deter them from going outside.
Orange City is south of DeLand and is in Volusia County.
