ST. PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) — Want to get into the booming business of beer? The University of South Florida St. Petersburg and Three Daughters Brewery, a popular brewery in the city, are teaming up to offer a Brewing Arts course.

The course offered is offered online, but there are opportunities for hands-on experience. “They’ll do hands-on training in six different breweries in the Tampa Bay area, and three different quality laboratory,” said Jim Leonard, the director the program.

The Tampa Bay area is quickly becoming a hotbed for craft “Beerology,” and USF St. Pete is hoping to help students get into the business of beer. “The craft beer industry is booming in the State of Florida and there was a recent study that talked about the tremendous growth over the next coming years, and I believe students are recognizing this as great career possibilities,” said Frank Biafora, the Dean of The College of Arts and Science.

The number of Breweries in Florida have nearly quadrupled in the past four years, according to the National Brewers Association, with many of those popping up in Tampa Bay.

“I see this whole craft beer renaissance happening here and I want to bring that to where I am in central Florida,” said Rhys Lynn, who is signed up to take the course. Lynn is hoping to open his own brewery down the road.

Many of the students feel the course being offered through USFSP’s College of Arts and Science will help them bridge the gap between being a home brewer to opening a major operation.

The online lectures cover everything from water quality chemistry to quality assurance. Mix that with a little hands-on training and student will be able to embark on a the world of beer.

It’s not too late to sign up for the course. Find out more information here: provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
