FORT GRATIOT, Mich. – A Michigan mom who was mocked for her weight and hair by women standing behind her at a fast food restaurant decided to do something nice for the two women who were so mean to her. Now, her Facebook post about the encounter has gone viral.
Dianne Hoffmeyer went to a Tim Horton’s restaurant a few days ago to buy donut holes for her teething 22-month-old child. Two middle-aged women were in line behind her and started saying mean things about her appearance.
“Oh, look at her hair. It’s nasty looking, the roots are coming through. Oh, she’s a whale. The whale needs to eat,” they said.
The insults hurt Hoffmeyer’s feelings. She recently lost 117 lbs.
“I ordered my cappuccino and the lady behind me, the older lady, she’s like ‘Oh even the whale needs to have liquids maybe she should go back into the water,’ ” said Hoffmeyer.
“I instantly started to cry because it hurts.”
Hoffmeyer said she did not know the women and had never seen them or met them. She did not know why they would choose to say something like that.
“I was crying because I was hurt, I was crying because I was getting mad. Here are these people who don’t know who I am, that don’t know what I’ve had to go through.”
Hoffmeyer said she wanted to set a by example for her children by paying it forward rather than acting on impulse and lashing out at the women.
“I told my cashier, I said, ‘I’ll pay for their coffee’ and she’s like, ‘What?’ ”
Hoffmeyer paid for the coffees then went out to her car and cried. She later wrote about the encounter on Facebook. That post has gone viral.
Hoffmeyer says if she ever were to come face to face with the women she would like to buy them another cup of coffee and talk to them and explain to them how their comments made her feel.
