TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – No disturbances were reported during a performance in Carrollwood Sunday by a controversial rap artist who had previously kicked a fan in the chest.

Kevin Gates performed at Whiskey North. Gates is facing a criminal charge after video surfaced showing him kicking a fan in the chest during a previous performance in Lakeland.

Former fans expressed outrage online and more than 7,000 people signed an online petition asking Gates to be banned from performing in Florida. The venue, Whiskey North, made numerous Facebook posts explaining how management there tried to get Gates to cancel the show.

Gates responded to the outrage by releasing a new song. Despite the outrage online, fans showed up to support him on Sunday.

“Everything went well,” said Navdeep Visla, owner of Whiskey North, “One thing I did not expect is, the artist even jumped into the audience and nothing happened.”

Visla insists he hired 50 people to work security for the performance so he could keep fans and the performer safe. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
