TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – An elderly man is clinging to life after he was injured by a hit-and-run driver while crossing a busy Tampa road on Tuesday morning. Tampa police are searching for the person who hit him.

Investigators say William John Thompson, 93, of Tampa, was crossing East Busch Boulevard at 28th Street at 10:50 a.m. when he was hit by a car.

Thompson was not using a crosswalk when he was hit by a gold 1995 Saturn. Investigators say Thompson hit the hood and the windshield of the vehicle.

The Saturn left the scene, driving west on Busch Boulevard. The car was later found with a smashed windshield. It was abandoned on the side of the road at 18th Street and Fairbanks Street.

According to witnesses, there were multiple people inside the vehicle at the time of the hit and run. Detectives want to talk to those passengers. Currently the passengers in the vehicle are not facing charges, but charges are possible if they withhold information relevant to a crime, according to a TPD spokesperson.
