CLEARWATER, FL (WFLA) – A quick-thinking deputy answered an unexpected call of duty and saved a man’s life in Clearwater.
While out on patrol Monday night, Deputy Matthew Davidson of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office stopped to write a report in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven convenient store located at 2789 SR 580 in Clearwater.
A while later, a 7-Eleven clerk burst out of the store’s front doors and put his hands around his throat, indicating that he was choking.
“They say when all else fails, you resort back to your training. That’s what happened,” said Davidson.
Davidson leaped into action, performing the Heimlich maneuver on 53-year-old Rusty Green, who was choking on a piece of chicken.
Local paramedics later responded to the scene and evaluated Green, who was uninjured. For his heroic actions, firefighters gave Deputy Davidson “Junior Firefighter” gear.
Working in law enforcement has a greater meaning for Davidson, a 3-year-veteran of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department.
Davidson tells News Channel 8 he was just doing his job.
“If you can make a difference in one person’s life or perhaps save their life, it is worth it. No matter how much stress we go through,” said Davidson.
