LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) – A church board of trustees will decide Friday if financial woes will force them to close the doors to a popular preschool. More than a hundred Lakeland-area families rely on the Noah’s Ark Childcare Center at the United Methodist Temple.
Parents got a letter last week informing them the daycare will close on August 28. Trustee John Ward says they just discovered Noah’s Ark is causing a huge burden on the church’s budget. “We should have discovered it before now,” Ward said. “We didn’t have the checks and balances in place and we have failed in that respect.”
Ward claims there was nothing fraudulent happening, just poor money management by a prior childcare director. While parents scramble to find other arrangements for their kids, Ward is hoping for a miracle. “If they have a heart for the program, they could help us out,” Ward said. “We are putting our trust in God’s hands that he will find a way – he is faithful.”
Ward said it will take at least a $50,000 in donations to save the daycare. The church board will make its final vote Friday.
