NEW PORT RICHEY, FL (WFLA) – A high school principal resigns amid allegations of an affair. Now the search is on to replace her just days before the new school year starts. River Ridge High School Principal Maria Swanson resigned Wednesday. She’s citing health reasons.

Swanson’s resignation came on the same day the district learned of a potential violation of the school board policy and an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

Superintendent Kurt Browning has appointed retired Pasco High School Principal Pat Reedy as temporary acting principal. He begins Thursday. River Ridge Assistant Principal Erik Hermansen has been temporarily reassigned to Fivay High School.

“This is the absolute worst time to have a shake-up in a school’s administration, but in the best interests of the students and staff, I thought it was prudent to make these moves now,” said Browning. “I’m confident that the remaining administrators and the faculty of this great school will work with Acting Principal Reedy to have a successful school year start.”

The search for Swanson’s replacement begins Thursday. The district will begin advertising the vacancy and begin interviewing candidates as soon as possible.
