Baby was locked in Howard Johnson hotel safe during game, cops say

(NBC) – A bizarre incident in which a baby was locked in a hotel safe was actually an accident during a game of hide-and-seek, police said on Thursday.

Canadian cops launched a hunt for the parents of the child after learning that staff at a Howard Johnson in Niagara Falls had been called to rescue the child from the floor safe on Tuesday morning.

Authorities said the family — who live in New Jersey — quickly left the hotel and they wanted to find out how it had happened and make sure the baby was in good health.

After learning they were the subject of a cross-border search, the parents called police on Wednesday evening.

“It appears that while the family was vacationing in Niagara Falls, the young child was accidentally locked inside the safe during a game of hide and seek between siblings,” Niagara Regional Police said in a statement. “The child was found to be in good health and this investigation is now closed.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
