St. Pete woman rescues sweet, snout-less pup ‘Khalessi’

ST. PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) — Doctors in Tampa Bay are calling this the worse case of animal abuse they’ve ever seen. Khalessi, a pit bull mix, was found starving in Orlando; her nose is missing and many bones were crushed. Veterinarians believe the injuries were caused from a baseball bat. And to make things worse, Khalessi was pregnant with her puppies when she was beaten to near death, doctors say.

However, the story has a happy ending. Khalessi — named after the strong female character from “Game of Throne’s” — has been adopted. “She just wanted whoever was abusing her to give her love, so I would ask how, how could they ever treat her that way?” said Stephanie Paquin, of St. Petersburg, who adopted the pup with Passion 4 Pits rescue.

Khalessi, originally thought to be age 2, is just barely one-year-old; a year that’s been full of pain, torture and abuse. Veterinarians working with the sweet pup believe someone took a baseball bat to her back, crushing the bones in her spine, her ribs and kneecaps — injuries that never healed. “She wasn’t born this way, someone did this to her, and that’s the most haunting part,” said Paquin. As if that wasn’t enough, Khalessi suffered excruciating injury to her face; her nose, sinus cavities and snout were savagely removed.

Despite all that trauma, she doesn’t have a mean bone in her body. Khalessi is a sweet pup who just wants to be man’s best friend.

Next week, she will get reconstructive surgery for her nose from a specialist in Hudson. At that time, doctors will also repair her legs. People all over the globe are donating to help Khaleesi, as the operations will be expensive. In one week’s time, over $43,000 has been raised for her treatment on a YouCaring page. You can contribute to her treatment here.

Orange County Animal Services is currently working with law enforcement to investigate who committed the abuse.
