Sarasota man charged with beating puppy for chewing pillow

This 14 pound puppy "Sugar" was beaten for chewing up decorative pillow.

SARASOTA, FL (WFLA) – The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 26-year-old man after he beat his nine-month-old puppy for chewing up a decorative pillow.

On Tuesday morning,26-year-old Steven Thompson, took the 14 pound terrier mix, Sugar, to an emergency clinic in Sarasota where veterinary staff determined the dog was in critical respiratory distress and suffering from internal injuries. When questioned, Thompson admitted to throwing the dog against the floor and striking her several times with a closed fist after Sugar chewed up a pillow that belonged to his girlfriend.

Sugar remains in the care of veterinary staff while she continues to receive medical treatment.  Thompson, of 3724 Helene St., was taken into custody Tuesday and charged with Cruelty to Animals with Injury. He was released on $1,500 bond.
