CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) — A 17-year-old girl is in the hospital Tuesday morning after a stolen vehicle she was reportedly riding in ran a red light in Clearwater, but the suspected driver of that vehicle is nowhere to be found.
Just after 11 p.m. Monday night, a 2013 Toyota Prius ran a red light and smashed into a Honda Odyssey van at the intersection of Northeast Coachmen and Belcher Road in Clearwater. The impact caused the Toyota Prius to flip and it landed in between two palm trees in front of a business park where Clearwater Police discovered the 17-year-old girl, but not the driver of the car.
The 17-year-old originally was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg and then was transferred to All Children’s Hospital, where she is listed in serious but stable condition. The two people in the Honda Odyssey van were not hurt.
The Toyota Prius was reported stolen just 90 minutes before the crash from 311 S. Betty Lane. A food delivery worker there had left his keys in the ignition as he was making a delivery and that’s when it was stolen.
The suspect who stole the car is described as a black male in his late teens with a heavy build. The investigation is ongoing. The intersection was closed to traffic for about two and a half hours.
