“The Spirit of ’45” at Bay Pines Cemetery celebrates end of WWII

Spirit '45 - 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) – People gathered at the Bay Pines National Cemetery Sunday afternoon to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II with ‘The Spirit of ’45’ event.

National Spirit of ’45 Day is observed on Aug. 16, the day when President Harry S. Truman announced that World War II was over and “America took on the responsibility for rebuilding the postwar world in an unprecedented effort to assure a better future for both its allies and former enemies alike,” according to the event organizers.

Veterans and residents gathered at the cemetery Sunday to listen to the key note speaker Charles “Rudy” Arnold, the cemetery administrator. A wreath was laid to commemorate the Spirit of ’45.
