Police say the incident occurred Sunday morning when a 23-year-old Clearwater man agreed to give another man a ride near the intersection of U.S. 19 and Sunset Point Road. Police report the passenger attacked the driver then forced him to drive to an ATM on Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard, where the passenger ordered the driver to withdraw cash. Police said the situation continued, when the passenger switched places with the victim and struck him several times during the drive.

According to police, the victim jumped out of the car at Keene and Druid Road and ran to a nearby house for help. He was taken to Morton Plant Hospital for treatment of his injuries and later was released.

Police said the assailant was last seen wearing a T-shirt with the words “Cali Life.” He is still on the run.
