Every year USF holds its Young Innovator competition for creative minds between Kindergarten and 8th graders. They encourage local students to invent something think maybe the world needs, or change something that already exists.
This year’s winner, Alexis Martin, joined Jenn Holloway on News Now to show off her anti-bully band.
Martin said she was learning about bullying in their regular class and when she heard about the competition thought “maybe I should something about bullying?”
Showing off the prototype, Martin says an electronic version would work by pressing a button that would be on the side of band. It would send a text message to your teacher with your location, name and picture. The teacher would come to the location to the stop the bullying.
For her invention, Martin won $1,000. She plans to patent the band and save for college. She also hopes to get Fitbit makers to help her with rubber or silicone to make the bands.
