There are approximately 45 million cases of curable and preventable blindness existing worldwide. And that is a number that could double by the end of the decade. One organization hoping to improve those numbers is making a difference, and they are right here in Tampa Bay.
Jason Woody is the President and CEO of the Lions Eye Institute. Wood’s organization is doing research all around the world. Started in 1973, Lions Eye Institute has brought the gift of sight to over 65,000 men, women and children that were blind or visually impaired.
Macular Degeneration is a silent disease, according to Woody. “People really aren’t aware you have it until it’s almost too late, and that’s one effect that is growing 10-fold each year,” according to Woody.
While many folks may hear about Macular Degeneration in older patients, Woody says, now the organization is seeing it in folks as young as their 40’s and 50’s.
