Jags’ DE Ryan Davis gives away backpacks in Tampa neighborhood

Davis gave away more than 500 backpacks.

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) – He was a standout football and basketball star at Blake High School in Tampa and went on to play college football at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, and now Ryan Davis plays professional football for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Friday Ryan returned home to Tampa to give away more than 500 backpacks filled with school supplies to children in the neighborhood he grew up in as a boy.

“This is my first time doing it and it was important for me to finally be in a position to give back to the community that raised me. I’m so happy,” Jacksonville Jaguars Defensive End Ryan Davis.

In between handing out backpacks, Ryan took time out to play with the kids and teach some of the boys some of his defensive skills.

“It means a great deal to me to reach out and be able to interact with them and get a feel for how they think and just to see the smile on their face and how they look at you it’s awesome,” Ryan said.

In addition to handing out backpacks with school supplies, Ryan had a “Back To School Bash” where he had refreshments and food for the community to enjoy at Winston Park in the Clair Mel City part of Tampa. Ryan wanted to give back to the community before he heads back to Jacksonville for training camp.

“They looked like they really enjoyed it and they were appreciative of it. One question I asked them what are you going to do with it. And they said use it in class and that’s what I want to do is give them the tools they need to be successful.”
