Winter Haven, FL (WFLA) – You can call them “the gold diggers.” Two bold and brazen men are behind bars, accused of using an excavator to haul an ATM away from the CenterState bank in Winter Haven Saturday. It’s a story you’ve got to see to believe, and of course, it was all caught on camera so you can. We’ve seen criminals hungry for money go to extremes to get the green, but this a first.
“These have gotta be the stupidest guys I’ve ever seen, Bob Kocot said. Francisco Hernandez and Jesus Sanchez, both of Clewiston, Florida, are charged with Grand Theft after cops caught up with the duo in nearby Dundee with an ATM in the back of their truck. Paul Gerrard, CenterState’s Community President of East Polk County, has been in banking 30 years believes the criminals craving the dough are a different breed these days.
“They’re getting braver and stupider every day in my opinion,” Gerrard said. He’s witnessed a lot but this is blowing his mind. “It’s a withdrawal like I’ve never seen before,” Gerrard laughed. He can’t put a timeline on cleanup but knows it’ll take a lot of moolah. Good thing is, in the end- the thieves didn’t get a dime.
“We just shake our heads,” Gerrard said. “It’s going to take several thousand dollars to rebuild and we’ll probably have to replace the ATM,” he said. It appears the suspects only dug themselves deeper in debt. Besides the $25,000 bond a judge handed down, officials tell News Channel 8 they also owe for soap and underwear issued at the Polk County Jail.
