Gluten-free diet gaining supporters

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) – While some think it’s bogus, others swear by a gluten-free diet. The diet is getting more attention after Wimbledon Gentleman’s single winner Novak Djokovic explained how the diet took his tennis game to a new level.

“Word got out and then next thing we knew we were getting phone calls and a lot of people they were coming in asking for it,” said owner of South Tampa’s Gourmet Pizza Company Kristina Lima who sells gluten-free pizza. “I don’t have the heaviness that you feel after you eat a lot of breads, a lot of wheat. There’s no bloating. I feel like I have more energy,” said Lima who also began a gluten-free diet.

There are plenty of those who don’t believe in the diet, saying the diet is a fad or “If you don’t have the allergy, don’t do the diet,” said Lima. But Rollin’ Oats Certified Nutritional Consultant Colin Gow claims there is a need for many to be on the diet.

“Probably about 60-70 percent of the population has issues with gluten, whether they know it or not, that’s the thing. It’s just inflammation mainly, just causes inflammation which can lead to gut permeability which can cause all kinds of problems, auto immune conditions and other things come from that,” said Gow. And while he recommends the diet he also has a warning about the many products out on the market.

“You have to look at labels really well, look at the sugar content. Just like anything there’s good gluten-free products and there are bad gluten-free products. You know look for a gluten-free product that still has a good amount of fiber instead of \zero grams or one gram of fiber,” said Gow. “The fact that it’s lasted this long, I don’t think it’s a fad at all.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
