SARASOTA, FL (WFLA) – Sarasota Police officers and Sarasota County lifeguards worked together to save a man whose canoe tipped over Saturday afternoon, according to Sarasota Police.
It happened at about 5 p.m. just off shore of Lido Beach. A canoe with a man and a woman in it was passing near a Sarasota Police Marine Patrol Boat which was at that location for the Grand Prix. The canoe tipped over and the man’s hand got stuck in the ropes.
The woman screamed attracting the officers’ attention. Sgt Richie Schwieterman and Sarasota County Lifeguard Bryce Makowski jumped in the water to rescue the man. Officer Mike Skinner, who was driving the boat, made sure that the man in the water did not continue to go under, according to SPD.
Schwieterman and Makowski got the victim to shore and he was able to cough up water and recover. Officer Juan Jaimes helped with the victim’s recovery on shore.
