TAMPA, FL (WFLA) — Get ready to dig deeper into your wallets to travel on some Bay area roads. Starting Wednesday, July 1, regular users of toll roads will have to pay a higher price to travel.
The rates for SunPass and toll-by-plate will increase by 1.6 percent. Travelers on the Suncoast and Polk Parkways, Veterans, and Lee Roy Selmon Expressways and Sunshine Skyway will feel the increase. It also applies to other toll roads in the state.
The Florida Department of Transportation is allowed to raise toll rates to keep up with inflation. To put things in perspective, the rates are only a penny or two for each toll that is passed through.
While the hike will impact SunPass and toll-by-plate users right away, drivers who pay with cash will avoid paying the higher rates until 2017.
