PLANT CITY, FL (WFLA) – Wayback Burgers restaurant in Plant City has a new way they want you to get your daily dose of protein and it involves eating grounded up crickets in an oreo milk shake. “The Cricket Shake features just as it says crickets. It’s actually a cricket powder. It is a peruvian Chocolate Cricket powder included in the shake. It also has oreos, chocolate, a little bit of coffee. It is absolutely delicious,” said Jim Payne who owns Wayback Burgers in Plant City.
The idea of serving up cricket protein in a milk shake started off as an April Fools joke earlier this year and Payne says once they posted the joke on social media, it went viral. “Back in March our corporate office was working on an April Fools joke for social media and they came up with the cricket milk shake idea but there was so much excitement and buzz generated about the shake that we actually explored creating the shake,” Payne said in his Plant City restaurant as he was whipping up the stores first round of “cricket Oreo Mud Pie” shakes.
Some customers we talked to were a little sceptical about trying a milk shake made with cricket protein. “I would drink it but I think it’s the mental part that’s getting me,” said 11-year-old Giselle Gutierrez as she was waiting with her mom for lunch. “I think it’s gross because I’m not like a bug person and I don’t like any type of bugs or anything so it’s kind of gross to see it and to think about it,” she added.
Gutierrez wondered out loud how 24 grams of cricket protein would really taste. “They wouldn’t sell it if it tasted like crickets so I’m guessing it probably taste like chocolate or something because there is chocolate in the powder,” Gutierrez questioned with a smile on her face. In addition to the Cricket Oreo Mud Pie shake, Wayback Burgers will also have a 20 grams Slim Jim shake promotion. You can get both milk shakes at Wayback Burgers through the end of September.
