WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (WFLA) – A man suspected of trying to strangle a woman at a Winter Haven motel has turned himself in to authorities.
Winter Haven police say John G. Reger, of St. Cloud turned himself in at the Polk County Jail on Tuesday night. Winter Haven Police detectives were interviewing Reger on Wednesday morning. An arrest warrant was issued for Reger after a woman he is accused of attacking took the tag from his truck.
Detectives say at 10:15 a.m. on June 28, the 20 year-old victim was walking along US. Hwy 17 towards the Royal Inn, which is locates at 3525 Lake Alfred Rd. She was headed to the room to pick up items. A gray Ford pickup truck pulled along beside her and asked if she needed a ride. The victim accepted the offer of the ride and Reger took her to the Royal Inn. The victim got out of the truck and thought Reger was going to stay inside of the truck while she collected the items from a motel room.
However, detectives say Reger waited a few moments, then followed the victim into the room without her knowledge. He came up from behind her and allegedly began to strangle her with both arms around her neck. He then knocked her to the ground and got on top of her.
The victim was able to fight her way free from Reger’s grasp and ran from the motel room. As she ran out of the room, she went to the truck retrieved the tag from the pickup truck before he got inside the truck and left. The victim had cuts and scrapes, but was otherwise physically unharmed.
