Temple Terrace police are searching for two men who shot a homeless man late Thursday night.

Shortly before 11:30 p.m., Temple Terrace police received a call from the Tampa Police Department about a shooting in Temple Terrace police jurisdiction.

Officers responded to a grassy field just south of a shopping center at 11407. N. 52nd St. and met with Tampa police officers who had initially been called to the scene.

The 59-year-old male victim had already been transferred to Tampa General Hospital prior to TTPD’s arrival. TTPD detectives went to Tampa General Hospital and interviewed the victim, who was awaiting surgery.

Detectives learned that the victim was a transient who was sleeping in a makeshift campsite. He awoke to hear two men calling out to him. He said the men did not demand anything, and told him to go back to sleep.

The victim started to get up when the two men fired several shots at him, striking him in the lower abdomen and right arm. The victim, who is not being identified, said he does not know the suspects and did not get a good look at them. His wounds are not considered life-threatening, police said.

The only description of the suspects the victim could provide: two men in their 20s, one possibly wearing a light-brown shirt, the other wearing a dark, hooded sweatshirt.

Anyone with information about this crime should contact the Temple Terrace Police Department at (813) 989-7110.
