Man killed by lightning in Largo

The lightning strike killed the man who was walking on a sidewalk.

LARGO, Fla. (WFLA) – A man was hit and killed by a lightning strike in Largo on Friday morning.

A Largo Police Department spokesperson says it happened in the area of Sandpiper Drive and Egret Drive.

Police responded to this location at 11:32 a.m.

Police say resident Jay Freres, age 81, was out for a walk when a storm came up. He was walking alone when the incident occurred.

The investigation is still active.

Largo Fire Rescue also responded to the scene.
