A wife and mother of two in Georgia is fighting for her life trying to battle flesh-eating bacteria, and doctors are not sure how she’s got it in the first place, CNN affiliate WSB in Atlanta reports.

Doctors had to surgically remove the dead tissues, and Cindy Martinez might lose her hands and feet. Her husband David is at her side at the hospital. He is a police officer. The two met as young marines and have been married for 13 years. They have a son, 5, and a daughter, 2.

Doctors say the flesh-eating bacteria called Necrotizing Fascitis could come from some kind of an open wound. But David Martinez says he didn’t see any wounds on his wife, it all started as a pain in her shoulder. Doctors are not sure how the woman got infected.
