An Amtrak train hit a car at the crossing in Tampa, Amtrak officials confirmed.

It happened Saturday afternoon near Tampa East Boulevard. Amtrak officials said, the car was trying to beat the train and go around the crossing gate.

Hillsborough deputies confirmed that the car driven by Jermaine Lamar Williams, 26, went around a few cars stopped for the train and through the lowered train crossing arms.

The car was t-boned by the train. Williams was taken to the Tampa General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

The train had 103 passengers and nine crew members on board. They were not injured. The train’s estimated speed was 78-79 miles per hour.

This incident was non-fatal, according to Amtrak.
