Sarasota – We’ve all heard noises while sleeping. That’s why Marti Pittman wasn’t worried when she heard sounds early Sunday morning.
“I was sleeping maybe 10 minutes and heard noises but I thought that was raccoons or something because there (are) many, many raccoons at night,” Pittman said. Pittman locked her bedroom patio door and went back to bed. She slept for several more hours until she got up around 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
“I was coming from here, from the bathroom, and I saw the bag on the floor and the wine on the table. It wasn’t this way when I went to bed. After I realize what happened, I saw the guy on the couch,” she said.
Pittman said she thought, “Oh my God.”
“Somebody is in my couch and he was sleeping there and covered with all of my blankets and with the pillows and everything. I didn’t see any face, just a bald head,” she told News Channel 8.
Pittman said she asked the man what he was doing and he apologized. She quickly called 911, but the man took off before police arrived.
“The other thing that was disgusting to me, when I was on the phone with the police, he stolen my wallet,” Pittman said.
Less than an hour later Sarasota Police found the suspect, Timothy Bontrager, a few blocks away. Police told News Channel 8 they found several hundred dollars on the suspect. Bontrager is now locked up on a $25,000 bond.
But for Pittman, it’s no mystery how the burglar made it in her home. She often leaves her doors unlocked but told News Channel 8 that will not happen again.
