A man has been charged with DUI after his truck slammed into a motorcyclist, dragging the vehicle 10 blocks, St. Petersburg police say.

Police say Luis Perez, 49, of St. Petersburg, was backing his pick-up truck onto 30th Avenue North around 8:45 p.m. Thursday when he backed into a car that was stopped in the turn lane at the intersection. After striking the car, police say Perez fled at a high rate of speed going westbound on 30th Ave. N, striking the motorcycle, driven by 37-year-old Alexander Galindo.

Perez’s truck slammed into the rear of the motorcycle, which became wedged under the truck. Galindo was dragged about 100 feet, police say, and the motorcycle continued to be dragged another 10 blocks.

Witnesses were able to chase and detain Perez when he stopped for a red light at the intersection of 49th Street North.

Galindo was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Perez, who was not injured, was arrested and charged with DUI Causing Serious Bodily Injury, DUI Causing Property Damage, Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Injury and Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Attended Property.
