A 1-year-old girl from Venice is in stable condition at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg after being accidentally shot by her 3-year-old brother.

The incident occurred in the parking lot of the Sonshine Learning Center in Venice at about 4:30 p.m. According to Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Vince Mayer the 3-year-old found a handgun and fired off a round while the children’s mother stood near her car speaking with other parents.

The bullet hit the 1-year-old in the mouth and neck area. Sarasota county paramedics treated the girl at the scene. She was then flown by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center.

The incident happened at about 4:30 p.m.

According to Lt. Mayer, the mother was distraught, and the child did not suffer any life-threatening injuries.

Detectives are still investigating. They have interviewed the mother. They will determine if any charges will be filed once they have completed their interviews.
