State investigates Tampa Bay area wedding photographer

Florida’s Attorney General’s office confirms it is now investigating a Tampa Bay area wedding photographer who is at the center of an 8 On Your Side investigation.

Customers of Gary Kaplan Photography are complaining they didn’t get what they paid for. Richard White complained to the state that Gary Kaplan Photography owes him $1,900. John Heaner’s complaint says he’s out $3,900. Tina Shank claimed she paid $5,400 and has nothing to show for her daughter’s wedding. Aren Anderton paid Kaplan $6,400.

“I feel like on the happiest day of your life, having someone like him ruin it is not an option,” Aren stated.

10 complaints against Gary Kaplan Photography are now sitting on the Attorney General’s desk.

In February, 8 On Your Side exposed problems that developed with this studio. Kaplan failed to deliver pictures, albums, etc. A day after our first report, Kaplan filed dissolution of incorporation papers with the state, effectively dissolving his company.

His friends and family claim Kaplan is seriously ill.

Married in December, Aren claims Kaplan went radio silent on her afterward. Aren finally heard from Gary Kaplan five months after her wedding, but just days after she complained to the Attorney General’s office.

He left her a voice message that said, “This is Gary Kaplan. I’ve been hustling, trying to get your pictures done. I know you called the state or whatever it is.”

Kaplan then provided Aren with a disk that he said contained one third of her pictures. The disk contains some beautiful photos, and some that are totally out of focus.

“I paid for prints, I paid for books, I paid for video, I got a disk. I’ll have to buy my own prints,” Aren added.

Now that the Attorney General’s office contacted Kaplan, he’s promised Aren would have all of her pictures within 30 days.

“So please call me, or get back to me, because I would like to know if this is ok,” Kaplan’s voice message added.
