Two Sarasota High School students were taken to jail, a few others will face administrative charges after a mass fight broke out at the cafeteria and the school resource officer had to use a Taser on them, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
When School Resource Officer Sheldon Cantrell responded to the fight at the East Cafe on campus, he found two students on the ground fighting and a security guard pinned underneath them. While he was trying to help the guard, another fight broke out.
Officer Cantrell saw a 16-year-old run up and punch another student, Pedro Alarcon, 18, in the face. They kept throwing punches and the officer tried to break them up. When the 16-year-old tried to run away, Officer Cantrell used a Taser on him.
He hit the student’s back-pack, and another security guard restrained the teen. In the meantime, Alarcon kept fighting, throwing punches and screaming obscenities. Officer Cantrell gained control over him stunning him with the Taser.
Alarcon and the 16-year-old were taken to the Sarasota County Jail on charges of battery for the 16-year-old and obstruction resisting without violence. The two students who started the initial fight will face discipline at school.
